What is a dosha?

What is a dosha?

The Ayurvedic term dosha means “energy.”  The energies, or doshas, are called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each of the 3 doshas are comprised of the 5 elements. Vata is air and ether, Pitta is fire and water, Kapha is earth and water. Every individual his born with a unique combination of the 3 doshas, like a fingerprint.  This “fingerprint” is called a person’s prakruti and it never changes. For this reason, every individual has a unique recipe for health and harmony.

Additionally, each individual has a vikruti which is the current state or present amount of the 3 doshas. A person’s vikruti changes daily, in fact it can change hourly or by the minute. It’s in a constant state of flux as a reflection of our daily lives. Vikruti is affected by what we eat, how we sleep, daily stress and exercise, etc. By assessing a person’s prakriti and vikruti we recognize the present proportion of each of the elements which determines that individual’s needs. This information lays out a path for balance, health and happiness.

To break it down, Ayurveda combines a person’s innate nature along with their current state of imbalance to prescribe what is most helpful for them to achieve balance on a daily basis. The practice of Ayurveda is ancient yet the wisdom lends itself beautifully to today’s busy world.
